Grammy Learns To "Surf"
Before my husband Doyle gave me a laptop, the only thing I knew about surf came from the 60's song "Surfin '" by groups like the Beach Boys or Jan and Dean. Surfing requires a beach attached to an ocean with big waves, right?
Neither! At 65, grandmother of three adult children and three grandchildren, I learned to "surf" without even wet. The secret lies in this computer Doyle gave me.
For two years, everything I did with She was balancing my bank accounts and play games on the thing. Oh, I knew there had Internet access and people used their computers for browsing. They called it "surfing". But I never thought such an activity was worth my time and energy. Now, I know differently.
You see, I am an artist and watercolor paintings have been for 22 years, but July 23, 2008, I published my first website and began showing my art box. It was the hardest, scariest, the bravest and most rewarding thing I did never in my life!
The irony is that my husband owns a computer company. Our oldest son working with him, and our youngest son is studying computer graphics at the university. Our daughter is also at ease with his computer as it is a journey into the living room. Yet, I never bothered to expand my skills beyond computer games and balancing Checkbook.
When it finally dawned on me that I needed a website to market my watercolors, I had no idea where to start.
Fortunately, I heard a presentation sponsored by a website builder. I 've registered and Doyle was asked to go with me. He is gone, has approved the product manufacturer, and bought the package.
The first item in the package was a day, introduction of Boot Camp. "This time I took my 25 year old son, studying computer graphics. I think – um – that could prove useful later.
Boot Camp "ended, I was home alone and ready to start. Husband was at work. Infographic son was at school. The computer was on. I spread my Notes opens the workbook and … and …. That's right. I could not remember the first thing they said in "Boot Camp".
I panicked! What had I done? Throw a bunch of money? I had never even shopped online. Believe me. True. With people from all these computers, smart living under my roof, everything that I had made on my computer was the balance of bank accounts and games.
Suddenly a glimmer of hope arises in my mind. I remembered that the package construction website provides a phone contact directly with its management team. My problem was solved. I just did not know yet.
I am worried that these people would speak geek "computer" talk. They were obviously members of the "computer generation". Young people who have probably grown without talking on a phone that took his camera attached with a cord or without "driving" a car window up or down, or purchase of a Coke in a green glass bottle for a nickel!
Fortunately, my fear was unfounded. These people were polite, helpful, patient, friendly and willing to use a language I understood "Git 'er done." In short, they helped me build my website and put it online.
That Grammy is surfing the Internet almost every day and getting a lot of shopping and work. Incidentally, you are invited to "surf" on over to my site.
